Life is busy. Between work, errands, chores, appointments, and the thousand tiny tasks that fill a day, it’s easy to fall into autopilot. We save excitement for vacations, weekends, or milestones — and miss the magic hidden in the ordinary moments that make up most of our lives.

But what if you didn’t have to wait for something big to feel something good?
What if joy could be woven into your day in small, intentional ways?

That’s what it means to be excited about your everyday life — and it’s a lot simpler than it sounds.

Seeing the Special in the Ordinary

When I talk about being excited about everyday life, I’m really talking about noticing the beauty, fun, and gratitude available in the routines we often rush through. It is about finding the joy in the everyday moments. A normal Tuesday might never rise to the significance of a holiday or a big celebration, but it can contain moments that make it feel lighter, sweeter, and more meaningful.

It’s about allowing yourself to enjoy small delights instead of treating them as background noise.

The Little Things Aren’t So Little

People often ask what I actually do to make the everyday feel more exciting, and truthfully — it’s nothing fancy. It’s simple, playful, and sometimes a little silly.

I use colorful pens when I work — and even better if they’re scented. Because why shouldn’t a to-do list smell like a blueberry scone?

coloful pens

I wear socks with cute patterns that make me smile when I look down. My favorites right now are my socks covered in tiny lobsters. A close second – the pair that has bright yellow lemons against a vibrant blue background.

And yes, I absolutely change my coffee mugs with the seasons. Pumpkins in the fall, snowflakes in the winter, flowers in the spring — tiny things that make life feel fresh and festive. During the Christmas season – I have all the Grinch options!

These little details won’t change the world, but they do change how I move through my day. They give me warmth, comfort, and moments of delight that make everything else feel lighter. These details make me grin!

Why It Works

These small gestures matter because they shift your mindset. They break up monotony. They help you be present.
A cute mug isn’t going to solve your problems — but it might soften a morning that would otherwise feel rushed or heavy. When you add intentional touches of joy to your daily life, your outlook changes. And that shift in perspective? That’s powerful. It’s not about the objects — it’s about what they bring out in you: gratitude, calm, joy, playfulness, creativity.

The reasons for the effectiveness of this approach run much deeper though. Were you curious if there is a faith-based application here? There absolutely is!

We are encouraged to have joy in all things (Philippians 4:4). We are also urged to remember that all the gifts we have come from above (James 1:17)! This idea of getting excited about your life isn’t a “carpe diem” mentality but one rooted in Biblical perspective of gratitude and stark awareness for the many ways God provides and blesses. This joyful embrace of everyday living is one that aligns with a call to celebrate each day that God has made (Psalm 118:24).

If You’re Thinking, “I Don’t Have Time for This…”

I get it. Truly. But this isn’t about adding more to your already full plate. It’s about reimagining what’s already in front of you.

Light a candle while you sit and answer emails.
Take your coffee outside for five minutes and breath in fresh air while you take in the horizon.
Play music you love while you fold laundry.

These tiny shifts don’t take extra time — they just infuse ordinary moments with personality and warmth.

You don’t have to overhaul your life to enjoy it more.
You just have to give yourself permission to find joy in what’s already there.

A Simple Challenge: Romanticize One Thing Today

Here’s my invitation to you:
Do one small thing that makes you smile — just for the joy of it.

Use the “fancy” mug on a random weekday.
Wear your favorite perfume – even if you are working from home.
Buy yourself flowers for the kitchen table.
Take the long way home just because the view is pretty.

When you start treating your everyday life like it’s worth celebrating… you realize that it really is.

PS – It only seemed right to conclude this post with a silly picture of me practicing what I’m preaching here!
